THE STORY OF TANHURST ESTATE VINEYARD

OUR UNIQUE POSITION

Tanhurst Estate vineyard is the only vineyard and winery on Leith Hill in Surrey. From the start, our mission has been to produce distinctive English wines that are truly of their place.

Our vineyard is located on Birkett’s Farm which has been owned by our family since 1826. Originally a cattle farm dating back to the 16th century, the estate is surrounded by acres of pasture, hedgerows, and woodland. Its sheltered position on the gentle southwest-facing slopes of Leith Hill, with well-drained loamy soil of sand and clay, is ideal for growing grapes.

OUR WINE PHILOSOPHY

We put our heart and soul into growing the best grapes which we tend and harvest by hand.

Our aim is to craft exceptional quality wines that express the unique terroir of Leith Hill.

We nurture the soil and grow our vines on regenerative principles. It’s a simple and sustainable approach to winemaking, with every part of process taking place on our estate.

OUR LEITH HILL LOCATION

Bordered by woodland in part of the Surrey’s Hill’s National Landscape, Tanhurst Estate is rich in wildlife and buzzing with bees, birds, bats, and butterflies, and we plan to keep it that way.

Everything we do is focused on caring for this natural environment and preserving the beauty of the place for future generations.

OUR VINEYARD

Our vineyard adventure began with the first planting of four and a half acres of Pinot Noir in 2020. The following year we planted a further 12,000 vines, including superior clones of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir Précoce. And in 2023 we planted two new fields of Cabernet Cortis and Sauvignon Blanc. Altogether we now have 30,000 vines.
