TANHURST ESTATE’S WINE NAMES
THE INSPIRATION FOR TANHURST ESTATE’S WINE NAMES
Tanhurst Estate is already establishing a reputation for producing fine quality English wines, and the names of our wines are designed to celebrate our wines origin and reflect their authenticity.
We have chosen nearby geographical location names for our wines to signify their unique characteristics, which are shaped by our local terroir – the climate, soil, and altitude. Plus, of course, naming a wine after its geographic origin is a long-standing tradition, as it emphasises that the place itself is a key component of the wine’s identity.
OUR THREE STILL WINES
Our three still wines, a chardonnay, a rosé and a Bacchus, which we have called Stonymoor, Rosiers and Whitings respectively, are names of areas of ancient wet woodland just above our vineyard. The woodland is a designated site of special scientific interest with many rare flora and fauna species including ferns and dormice; and it’s one of the most important in southeast England.
Colin Grimes, owner of Tanhurst Estate, says: “I have managed and looked after this historic woodland for the past 40 years. So, it seemed apt for me to choose the woodland names for my wine, as, for me, they are both exceptionally rare and special.”
OUR TWO SPARKLING WINES
Our two debut sparkling wines are named after two beautiful village locations, near to Tanhurst Estate, in the Surrey Hills countryside.
Felday, our Classic Cuvee 2022 is named after an area in the pretty woodland village of Holmbury St. Mary, known for its Iron Age hillfort and First World War prisoner-of-war camp.
Folles, our Pinot Noir Rosé 2022 is the earliest recorded name for the charming, ancient hamlet of Forest Green nestled at the foot of two of Surrey’s best-known beauty spots, Holmbury Hill and Leith Hill.
OUR SURREY HILLS ROOTS
At Tanhurst Estate, while our premium wine names and labels proudly reflect what’s in the bottle and our Surrey Hills roots, they also display our commitment as a boutique English vineyard to the craft of local artisan winemaking, sustainability and regional quality. When you choose a Tanhurst Estate Vineyard wine you will be supporting your local economy, reducing your carbon footprint, and connecting with a real place and people. Every glass of our wonderful wine will provide you with a more personal and meaningful experience.
OUR WINEMAKING
